"Give"
November 19, 2006
from Romans 12:1-2, 14-21
"I appeal to you therefore, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship..." Romans 12:1
My sermon outline:
• What would it look like if Jesus walked the earth today? How would you know it was Jesus? And if you had a reason, how would that reason sound coming from someone else?
• Not by appearance, perhaps by “something” (aura, spirit), hopefully definitely by message (what does he do/say?)
• What might Jesus do? (preach, teach, heal)
• What might Jesus say?
- Love (a must, yet misunderstood/interpreted)
- Peace (less understood, more cliché; is it absence of war? Presence of harmony?)
• I think maybe Jesus would say Give.
• John the Baptist told the people to give (Luke 3:10-11). Echoed by Jesus in Sermon on Mount.
• Jesus and the rich young man (Mark 10)
• Jesus and the widow’s mite (Mark 12)
• Paul: 1 Timothy 6:18: "Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share."
• God has been generous with us, (1 Peter 1:3, Romans 6:23) and wants us to be generous as well (2 Corinthians 9:6-8)
• All we have is God's... Giving is our heart's thankful response to God's gifts.
• Give of yourself as Jesus did, that the world may live
• thanksGIVing, giving at Christmas (Beauty & the beast, Little Drummer Boy), church giving
